500 Million Fans and Growing

Facebook is expected to reach an impressive milestone of 500 million users this week. To celebrate this achievement, Facebook is going to launch a website within Facebook called "Facebook Stories". This will be a visual memorial to mark the ways the social network has changed people's lives. Users can submit stories about how Facebook has connected them with a long lost relative, helped them through a natural disaster etc. Users can of course choose to "Like" stories and the ones with the most "Likes" will be featured. Before the launch of the site, Facebook has invited users to start submitting stories here.

 The Old Spice Guy

Have you heard about the latest YouTube sensation? (We're not talking about Justin Bieber.) Last week Old Spice launched a social media campaign that had huge viral success. The Old Spice guy who appears in commercials was taking questions from anyone via Twitter. He would respond to these questions by making personalized video responses and posting it on YouTube within minutes of getting the questions. Within 48 hours, Old Spice became the third most viewed and fourth most subscribed channel of all time. Old Spice is clearly trying to reach a younger demographic and are doing so successfully.

Facebook For Kids?

Togetherville is the latest online community targeted to kids who are too young for Facebook. It allows kids to experience social networking in a fun, age-appropriate environment with the involvement from parents and other trusted adults. Adults sign up using their Facebook account and are then able to create an account for their child. Pulling relationships and data from the adult's Facebook page, parents will be able to find children of their adult friends and connect them to their child on Togetherville. The whole time parents have complete control over who communicates with their child. Once the account has been created, a kid can "like" content from friends and also comment using a drop-down menu of pre-written "quips". Kids can participate in art projects, games and watch appropriate, pre-screened YouTube videos. Togetherville is a great tool for children to experience social networking and could help teach the next generation of Facebook users how to use social media responsibly.
