Glog? What the heck is a glog?
That's probably your first question... Our official textbook definition is over to the right, but let's shed some light on what it is.
Engaging with people online - it's the new 'meet you at the coffee shop'. In the last year, the ways we engage have changed dramatically. People are spending more time online everyday, and those numbers are going to increase. So if that's where people are spending their time, then we should pay some serious attention to it - Social Media. This Glog is put together to help put it in perspective and to offer insights on how to 'play along'. We'll touch on business and personal. It will be short, and it will be delivered when we find things that we feel are of interest. We hope you give it a chance and enjoy some helpful and interesting information that can benefit you and your business.
Viral Hit for the Fake BP Twitter
Shortly after the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico started, somebody set up this spoof BP Global PR Twitter account which provides a dark, satirical commentary about the spill and cleanup efforts. @BPGlobalPR has grown to over 174,000 followers and is currently growing by approximately 4000 a day! The issue (to the real BP) lies in the fact that this can easily be mistaken for the genuine BP Twitter page. While it’s not unheard of for people to set up entire spoof websites to poke fun at brands, setting up a fake social media profile for a brand is new, and very easy. Twitter lends itself perfectly to this kind of parody. It’s funny - real funny, until it happens to you.

How do you spend your time online?
It's obvious that internet usage has become a large part of our everyday lives. According to a new study from Nielson showing internet usage in April 2010, three quarters of global consumers visit a social network or blog when they go online, spending over 110 billion minutes on these sites. That's up almost 25% since last year.
Take a look at these stats by Nielsen. |
